Derek Robbie and DRR Motorsports/MGM score first top ten of 2017
Waterford, CT- In only his fourth start in a tour-type modified DDR Motorsports driver Derek Robbie scored his first top ten finish at Saturday night’s Wings and Wheels event at the New London Waterford Speed bowl. Derek brought his Raceworks chassis/Dodge powered car home in 8th place after 100 laps of close quarters racing.
After starting the day with a few minor growing pains attributed to being a startup team, he continued to grow as a driver and wound up with a finish beyond expectations. “We came into this year looking to log laps and finish the best we can. I’m still learning a lot and to be out there racing with Ted Christopher, Chris Pasteryak and other veterans is awesome” stated the excited Robbie. In his heat race Derek started on the pole position and raced them for several laps before settling for a 4th place finish in the qualifier.
With adjustments made for the big event, the plan remained the same, logs as many laps as possible and come home with a solid finish. Twenty-three cars were starting the 100 lap event with Robbie going off in the tenth position based on his heat race finish. Racing hard early and having several tight battles for position he settled in near 15th place before slowly moving forward over the next 68 laps where he found himself sitting in fifth place. With a caution on the track, the ensuing restart saw him shuffled back to 10th place and an eventual spin through the infield bringing out another caution. From there forward Derek continued his battle and brought the car home in one piece with an 8th place finish to a happy crew.
Says co-owner Mark Giordano “I can’t say enough how happy we were with the way the car ran tonight. This place has tight racing and 100 laps is a long time. Derek is learning every time he goes on the track and we are ecstatic to come out of here with a top ten. Makes getting ready for next week easier”
The team will now prepare for its next race, a 75 lap event on August 19 at the Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough, ME. For Robbie, it will be a return to the track he first raced a modified at when he began his Pro4 racing career at the age of 15. The race program begins 7pm, come out and help cheer Derek on to another great finish.
Great finishes don’t come without great support and DDR Motorsports along with Derek and MGM would like to thank their families for the continued support and encouragement. They would also like to thank their friends and the fans along with his loyal partners for their continued support with racing in 2017. They include Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, NH, Marshall’s Jewelers, in Bellingham, MA, Tri-Phase Contractors of North Haven, CT, Bellingham Parts Plus of Bellingham, MA, NH Oil Undercoating of Concord, NH and RH2way Racing Communications of Riverside, NJ.
The team is also looking for additional financial and personnel support as they strive to conquer the rigors of New England short track racing.
