Derek Robbie to make first Tour-type Modified start
After a longer than expected winter in New England and a bunch of hard work in the garage, Derek Robbie is ready to make his first Valenti Modified Racing Series start. The 21 year old college student from Bellingham, Ma will pilot the family owned and prepared machine this Saturday at Speedway 51 in Groveton, NH.
Robbie’s background is extensive with open wheel cars being the style he has driven the most in his 12 year career. Starting in Quartermidgets before moving to Microsprints on dirt and then back to asphalt in the New England Pro Four Modified Series, he is up to the challenge in the larger more powerful tour type modifieds. Stated recently “The realization I’m going modified racing is hitting me. It’s only a couple of days away and I’m excited, nervous but excited” says Robbie.
The #27 DDR Motorsports Development/MG Motorsports prepared Raceworks race car is co-owner by Derek’s father Doug Robbie and Mark Giordano with Giordano leading the team on race days. The car also sports a Dodge engine making the small team unique in the modified world. The co-owners have been long time friends, team mates and competitors, but have always shared the same philosophy about racing. It was only natural at one point they collaborated in an attempt to take on the racing world.
Doug pipes in “We like to be different. Mark and I have always said you can’t beat others by doing what they do, you need to separate yourself. This is our chance to be different and show everyone what we are capable of.”
For its maiden run the team will carry sponsorship from Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, NH, Tri-Phase Contractors of North Haven, CT, Bellingham Parts Plus of Bellingham, MA, and NH Oil Undercoating of Concord, NH.
The team is also looking for additional support as they strive to conquer the rigors of New England short track racing.
